So ever since Agents of SHIELD canon went to hell partway through season 1, @slamncram and I have coped with the destruction of our ship by living in many, many AUs instead.
“Nobody puts on a fireworks show quite like intensely patriotic Americans. Or, Disney Parks.” Ward leans forward a bit over the lip of the cargo ramp of the Bus, eyes on the sky, following the arc of the fireworks on the opposite hill. “But, pretty sure this is intensely patriotic Americans.”
Fitz laughs, and the firework explodes, drowning him out so that Ward mouths ‘what’, making him lean in to speak into the other’s ear.
“It’s quite the show. I’m impressed. I assume that’s the intention?”
Ward nods, shifting back with a smile. The fireworks in the sky mirror themselves into his eyes, and for a second Fitz forgets to watch the night sky, too taken up in the play of blue and red over warm brown. “Something like that.”
The night air is cool, early July chill seeping into their clothes, but Ward’s arm around his waist, and solid presence at his side, keeps Fitz warm. The others went into the city to watch the fireworks. Fitz had been sleeping in his bunk, and Ward had stayed behind with him. He’d woken up at the first boom, and within five minutes was coaxing Ward into lowering the ramp so they could sit and watch the show together.
Fireworks arc across the navy of the sky, and Fitz feels the boom in his chest. It fits in nicely next to the booming of his heart when Ward kisses his temple and whispers, “I love you”, into his ear.
When he turns his head and catches Ward’s lips in a kiss, he’s sure of the fact that lights behind his eyes have nothing to do with the sulphur and charcoal exploding in the sky. Sitting on the cargo ramp of the Bus, in the July breeze, the night exploding around them, Leo Fitz is sure that the colours he sees behind his eyes have nothing to do with those manmade fireworks, and everything to do with the ones Grant Ward lit.
“We’re friends, aren’t we?” "Despite all of this, it’s really good to see you.“
It’s high time to celebrate the relationship between these allies turned friends turned frenemies, and that being said, we have organized the very first Fitzward Appreciation Week.
